What effect does layers upon layers of color have on your painting?
Mark Rothko, one of my favorite artists, was famous for putting multi-layered colors, one on top of another to achieve a luminous effect.
This is what he is known for.
In today’s video you can watch me begin an abstract landscape doing just that.
Adding thin washes of layers on top of each other using mostly water lends itself to not only beautiful texture, but paint colors that have tremendous depth.
The first layer you’ll see me putting totally saturated color down straight from the tube.
What happens after that is not only fun but helps guide the direction I take in this landscape.
