Suppose numbers didn’t exist

What would it feel like if there were no numbers indicating the amount of followers we have on social media?

What if we walked into a clothing store and none of the clothes had a number size on them?

How much money do you make?

How many calories, carbs, protein or Weight Watchers points are in that recipe?

What if there wasn’t a specific number on the scale when you stepped on it to see your weight, and instead it said something like, “You’re doing great today,” “Have you had enough fruit today?” or “Remember to laugh at least once today.”

Comparing ourselves to others can be a preoccupation, and it seems that we’re either ahead or behind someone. So we feel good or bad depending on our number compared to the numbers of someone else.

Lately I’ve become disenchanted with social media and all the things we see about other people’s lives that might seem so much better than our own. It seems like many times we’re coming away feeling less than…for one reason or another.

Years ago, we didn’t have Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. And believe me, I’m betting that in the next five years some of these platforms will be gone and others will replace them. What will those look like?

The bottom line is we all want connection with others. I love certain things about social media and that is seeing photos of family and friends that are across the country. Sharing with friends and loved ones is what we crave.

Every time I leave my grandchildren in Los Angeles, I tell them I will write them an old-fashioned letter because I want to keep in touch. Boy, what I would give to get one from them. It would make me smile from ear to ear, and then I would go post it on the front of my refrigerator so I could see it every day. The last time I was leaving LA, my granddaughter Lily gave me a fabulous drawing she made and it continues to make me happy every single day because it is front and center on my fridge.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I wish we could all take a PAUSE from social media, from television, from looking at our phones, from thinking about how much money we make, how much we weigh, how old we are, and just take a minute to breathe and be grateful for our health, the love we have for others and they have for us, and that we are here on this earth.

If numbers didn’t exist, I think we would all lead much happier, healthier, and carefree lives. I hope you make time today, even for just one minute to pause, take a deep breath and think of living your best life.
