Just Real Enough Not To Be Abstract

Composing an abstract floral painting is very different than composing a fully abstract painting, at least for me.

The stages of composition and design are vastly different and in this video I will be sharing with you each of my 6 distinct stages of painting my abstract florals.

With the florals I figure out the overall composition and design before first putting brush to canvas.

With the abstracts I have a concept in mind when I begin but every stroke I make on the canvas informs the next stroke.

I might begin an abstract wanting it to be a "mostly neutral" or perhaps a "mostly blue" painting.

This initial concept guides me throughout the abstract piece.

Still, both types of paintings have a lot in common, especially with regard to basic principles of design.
