Composing an Abstract Painting

8/26/2019

Have you ever wondered what goes through an artists mind as they think about what the next steps are in the middle of a painting?

How do you determine what the next step is?

In this video, I walk you through my thinking process as I decide what I need to do to create a more effective composition in the middle of my process of creating a large abstract painting.

Once you get to the middle of a painting it leads you to the next step by thinking about how to not only balance the composition but to think about how the viewers eye moves around the canvas.

I hope it helps you think through your own painting process.

COMPOSING AN ABSTRACT PAINTING / In this video I show how I move through the middle part of the process of composing an abstract painting. The key considerations are providing depth and contrast, and keeping the viewer’s eyes moving around the painting.
