There are so many images of artists in their studios standing across the room and just silently looking at the painting they are working on.
Or they might sit in a paint-splattered comfortable chair and just stare at the work that they are creating on the easel or hanging on the wall.
I often do this myself and this thought came into my mind: “Think about all the time we artists spend thinking about what to do next in our work and what is really going on in our brains?”
Stepping back and taking a pause to evaluate things is what gives us a different perspective.
Think of your brain like a huge playground with different sections.
Creativity sort of hangs out in an area called the “imagination zone.”
It’s where all the ideas come from!
It’s not just one spot, but more like different parts of your brain working together, like when you’re solving a puzzle or making up a story.
Imagine you’re painting a picture.
You’re adding colors, lines, and shapes, making it just how you want it to be.
Now, sometimes we stop and take a step back to look at what we’ve done.
Why?
Well, it’s like taking a break to see if everything looks right, just like when you step back from a puzzle to see if all the pieces fit together.
Artists pause to check if they’re happy with what they’ve made or if they need to fix something.
Maybe you notice a part that’s not quite right or a spot where you can add something else.
Artists do the same thing when they pause and look at their work.
It’s all about making sure their creation is the best it can be before they share it with the world.
Overall, the experience of standing back and looking at a painting can be deeply personal and reflective for artists.
It’s a moment of connection between the artist and their creation, where they can evaluate their progress, express their emotions, and gather inspiration for future work.
These moments, or hours of quiet conversations between you and your work are very intimate ones.
It’s just you and your painting communicating in a very special way.
I hope the next time you do this you celebrate what a magical moment it is.
