What’s the Most Important Word to Think of in Painting?

6/26/2023

There is one word in particular that I continue to think of during my painting process that will bring me the most successful paintings.

Can you guess what that word is?

Is it Color?

Is it Layers?

Is it Composition?

Is it Variety?

Is it Tools?

If you answered VARIETY then you’re correct.

Think of it this way… which one below is more interesting to you?

variety

My guess is that you thought the second one is waaay more interesting.

I know I do.

“At its core, the principle of variety is about creating interest and contrast. It’s a way to use different elements – such as color, line, shape, texture, form, and space – in an artwork to keep the viewer engaged.” finearttutorials.com

Variety not only keeps the viewer engaged, which is what we all want, but it gives the work personality.

I don’t totally forget about all the other important elements when I’m creating abstract paintings, but with every brushstroke, every shape, every line, and every color, my main concern is thinking of creating differences.

An easy way I’ve created for doing this is “thinking in three’s.”

Large, medium, and small shapes.

Dark, medium, and light values.

Brushes, palette knife, and trowel.

These are some of my tools I use to paint with.

So, you see, it can be really simple.

Today I have a brand new YouTube video for you to watch while I demonstrate the importance of this most important word VARIETY.

I’ll be demonstrating an easy and fun exercise on watercolor paper using a limited palette of colors.
