Finding Your Art Style
Finding your art style can be an extremely personal journey, but it doesn’t have to be a lonely one. The artists that inspire us with their styles were also in the same position, once upon a time. They were also inspired by artists who came before them, and even by their peers. What made them great artists in their own right is that they took the time to nurture their styles out of the ones they loved already.
Style is a montage
Just like faces, artistic styles are a collection of features. Think about your favorite artist and their style. What type of brush strokes do you associate with them? What color palettes do you associate with their work? What kind of feeling does it invoke in you?
Asking these questions can break the art down to its bare bones. Once you see the underlying structure in certain styles, it’s easier to understand why they work. But remember, bones are just bones. The real fun starts when you can improvise around the basic structure of your favorite style.
Understand audience expectation
Our styles aren’t just about how we present our art either. Styles are like genres – both have an audience who will have a list of expectations about the art in their genres. Luckily, as an artist, you don’t have to meet all their expectations.
Find your bad habits early
If you know your drawings tend to lack structure, take some time to do just structure work. Read and watch experts in the areas you’re weakest in and study their techniques. Not only will this help you reduce bad habits in your process, but it’ll make the overall work stronger too! That said, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and if something works for you, don’t be afraid to incorporate it into your style
